So I’m having my front diff re-rebuilt ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) and just yesterday I went on a little test drive with my mom in her 2008 highlander cause she heard a noise and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! sounds like bearing noise. Turns out the rear diff pinion bearing is shot and her rear diff is being rebuilt. interesting. Also, According to my parts guy...yeah I have a parts guy...they do a lot of carrier seals on these highlanders. hmmm.

Turns out the rear diff pinion bearing is shot
is it actually “shot” or did it get taken out by incorrect preload?

I can’t say for sure, she relayed the info to me. Either way it sounds like a lawnmower and it’s leaking gear oil.

How long has it been leaking?

I had my differential redone a couple weeks ago because I wanted an LSD.
Tires are today!

I’ve still got a $1200 tire bill coming up probably next spring. Yay!

Going with Duratracs again or trying something else? I think the Cooper STT Pros look great, but they're probably overkill for my uses.

Probably ko2s, the d tracs have been nice but they are too much money

My tires were a lot less than that.

I was hoping that they would start coming down in price due to their popularity and OEM usage, but it doesn’t sound like it. The KO2s look good. What are they running per tire?

I can find then for about 210 vs 230 or mote for the d tracs

not sure, but I love holding in my hands my old ring...its improbably meaty yet made with such precision. Now I will have 2 old rings to look at!

That's not bad. I was just looking at the STT Pros and noticed that the 295/70 is actually $30 cheaper per tire than the 275/70. I can only guess the 275 size is more popular.

yeah, 275 is a lot more the right size for most stock trucks.

yeah, I have to keep it under 30 to tuck.
235/55R18 front, 255/55R18 rear.

We just this week did a preload and lash check and adjust on two Range Rover diff units we’re going to put in a long wheelbase Series project. Same bolt pattern, same drive splines, different (higher) ratio. The original rear axle case needs a fill plug point welded to it for this, but other than that the whole process is pretty simple.

yeah, I didn’t have the time for the labor let alone to learn the skill. Im cutting it close as is, otherwise I might have tried.

We didn’t do a full disassembly and ensure the pinion was at the right x.xx mm deck height because ain’t nobody got time for that (despite the fact we actually *do* have the tools), but the one that checked out a little loose in the teeth was also down on preload, so we cranked the bearing a little tighter opposite the slack. Done and done.

I just escaped working on differentials, I don’t know how I feel seeing them now.
